What Can Root Canal Therapy Help You Address?

Pain will not settle

Persistent toothache or sensitivity needs a diagnosis; pain alone does not mean you need a root canal.

Swelling appears near a tooth

Tell the office when it began and whether it is worsening so an assessment can be arranged.

You want to keep the tooth

Ask whether the tooth can be treated and reliably restored, and what other options exist if it cannot.

Your Care With Dr. Hsieh

Dr. Hsieh assesses the source of the problem and the condition of the tooth. He will discuss whether root canal treatment is appropriate, what it involves and how the tooth may need to be restored afterward.

Dr. Hsieh earned his D.D.S. from New York University in 1989, has practiced dentistry in New York for more than 35 years, and has taught at NYU College of Dentistry. He oversees care provided at this office personally and explains when specialist referral is appropriate.

Your Visit, Step by Step

Find the cause

Examine the tooth and use relevant tests or X-rays to understand the problem.

Treat the inside of the tooth

For suitable cases, clean and seal the root canals using appropriate anesthesia and treatment techniques.

Plan the final repair

Discuss the filling, crown or other restoration needed to protect and use the tooth.

Ongoing Care

Follow the instructions for the treated tooth and complete any recommended restoration. Contact the office about persistent or worsening pain, swelling or a loose temporary filling.

Common Questions

Does every toothache need a root canal?

No. Tooth pain has different causes. An examination is needed before recommending this treatment.

Will I need a crown afterward?

Some teeth need a crown or another protective restoration. The choice depends on the tooth’s location, remaining structure and bite.

Can the tooth always be saved?

Not every tooth is suitable for root canal treatment or restoration. Dr. Hsieh will explain the findings and alternatives if keeping the tooth is not practical.
